There was great news today with the announcement from Scottish Power that they will not be seeking to implement any changes to the long standing flow in the Doon. The actual application is still live with SEPA but it is quite clear now which way the decision will go.

The press release from Scottish Power refers to the “the strength of feeling around wider impacts of our proposals”. What the whole affair has shown is that Ayrshire folk, and from beyond, really care about their natural environment and the Doon in particular. Culturally, socially and economically the River Doon is an important part of the fabric of the Ayrshire and when it status is threatened they respond.

The SavetheDoon campaigners were organised and dogged and secured a wide base of support against the proposal. It was clear to me from the start that the application should and would be refused but the broad coalition amassed against the proposal made it inevitable.
