Gordon spied this Giant Hogweed plant in an almost inaccessible location. I say ‘almost inaccessible’ because without climbing experience I think it would be impossible to deal with this solitary invader.

A challenging plant

But of course, neither Gordon nor I are equipped or able to get to it and much as Helen is a keen but relatively inexperienced climber, I think this is beyond her abilities. We are fortunate that our Contractor Tom Halliday is well used to ropework and has a head for heights. Tom is an experienced and qualified tree surgeon and immediately told Gordon that he would sort the plant out. That’s dedication and beyond the call of duty but if we are ever to achieve eradication. It is the sort of commitment necessary to achieve our ambitious goals. I look forward to seeing the photos of Tam in action. Watch this space! The only other option was to try bombing it with glyphosate from the quadcopter but that was quickly ruled out!

The photos were taken from the New Howford Brig over the Ayr near Mauchline.

View from Howford Bridge. The plant is located just out of view near the top of the right bank.
