Every barrier and obstacle that salmon are confronted with on their journey back from sea saps energy, slows migration and consequently makes them more vulnerable to predation, poaching, disease and injury. Part of the Ayrshire Rivers Trust remit is to try and find and make improvements to known man made barriers. Often this takes substantial amounts of time and stakeholders need to be engaged and funding found to make alterations. This short video shows just how detrimental weirs and dams are to salmon making their way to spawning grounds in the headwaters of the catchment.
